Why We Need More Rooms in the United States

We’re living in a time of unprecedented social and economic instability, yet we have plenty of empty rooms in hotels, motel rooms and other lodging spaces across the country.

There are now more than 20 million empty rooms nationwide, according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

A few days ago, a study found that more than one-third of U.A.T. households in the state of California, home to the nation’s second-largest homeless population, are living in hotels or motels.

While many people are looking for new housing options, many are also living paycheck to paycheck.

Some states are seeing a big jump in the number of households that have no money at all.

For example, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday that the number dropped 5 percent from the previous year, while the national unemployment rate has increased by 4.6 percentage points.
